Albert was born on the 22nd April 1891 at 37 Richmond Row, Liverpool to Liverpool born master butcher ,George Smith, and his Liverpool born wife Harriet Asia (nee Mason). They were married on the 25th December 1883 in Liverpool. They had seven children of which two died pre 1911.
Albert was baptised on the 07th May 1891 at St Peter's Church, Liverpool.
On 1901 Census at 37 Richmond Row, Liverpool his father is aged 59 and is employed as a butcher, his mother, Harriet, is aged 37 with no occupation listed. His siblings are recorded as; George, aged 15, and a joiner's apprentice, Gilmore is aged 13, Ann is aged 11 and Albert, himself, is aged 9.
On the 25th December 1909, on their wedding anniversary, Albert's father, George, died, aged 68, of a heart attack at home at 11 Horatio Street, Liverpool.
On 1911 Census, aged 19, Albert is a butcher and is a boarder with the Baker family at 6 Berkley Square, Back Roscommon Street Everton. Edgar Hugh Baker is the head of the household he is aged 28 and unemployed, his wife, Elizabeth, is aged 25 and listed as a housewife, also present is Bridget Coole shown as mother in law aged 45 and a widow. Also present are two boarders, Albert Smith aged 19, and James Adams, aged 62, a widow and employed as a wheelwright.
On the 18th April 1914, when aged 23, Albert married Margaret Ann Bell at St Peter's Church, Everton.
In 1915 he enlisted, joining the 18th Battalion (Pals) of The King's Liverpool Regiment as Private 270089.
His son, also named, Albert, was born on the 11th May 1916.
In 1916 Albert went overseas with the 18th Battalion, K.L.R.
In Spring 1918, Albert was transferred to the 13th Battalion of The King's Liverpool Regiment.
On the 21st August 1918 he was presumed as died of his wounds with the 13th K.L.R. in France.
His body was not recovered or was subsequently lost as he is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial in France at Panel 3 & 4.
His war gratuity of £8:10s and his army pay arrears were paid to his widow Margaret Ann.
In 1921 Margaret Ann Smith remarried to William Monaghan.
Sadly, his son, Albert Smith Jnr, was killed at sea on the 07th September 1940 as Able Seaman in Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve aboard HMS President III. Albert is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial on Panel 44, Coloumn 1.
