He was killed in action on 20th September 1917, aged 19.
On 20/09/1917 on the Menin Road East of Ypres Zero hour was 5.40 a.m.
It was not until 5 p.m. that Brigade HQ received reports that Hill 37 was captured.
His death was reported in the Liverpool Express on 29th October 1917 under the header:
LIVERPOOL'S FALLEN HEROES
Private W.J. Burbridge, K.L.R. who was killed in action on Sept 20th, was 19 years of age. He lived with his parents at 12 Drayton-street, Everton and previously was employed at the docks.
He now rests at Dochy Farm New British Cemetery, Llangemarck, Belgium VI.E.14 where his headstone bears the epitaph:
"A SILENT THOUGHT A SECRET TEAR KEEPS HIS MEMORY EVER DEAR".
Dochy Farm, which had become a German strong point, was taken by the 2nd/5th Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment on 26 September 1917, in the Battle of Polygon Wood. The cemetery was made after the Armistice when isolated graves were brought in from the battlefields of Boesinghe, St. Julien, Frezenberg and Passchendaele.
The cemetery now contains 1,439 burials and commemorations of the First World War. 958 of the burials are unidentified but special memorials commemorate two casualties believed to be buried among them.
The cemetery was designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield.
William James is commemorated as Burbridge is commemorated in the Hall of Remembrance, Liverpool Town Hall, Panel 12 Right.
The correct surname of Burbidge was verified by the family notice of his mother's death in the Liverpool Daily Post on 01st August 1942.
