James was born in 1878 the son of Thomas and Mary Ann Arnold (nee Smith) who were married 14/10/ 1871 at St John the Baptist, Burscough. He had 2 brothers, John and William who died young and 4 sisters Elizabeth, Ann,  Mary Ellen and Alice. James was baptised at St John the Baptist Church, Burscough on 27/04/1879.

The 1891 Census shows the family living at Burscough Village. Parents with children John, James, Elizabeth, Ann, Mary Ellen and Alice. his father is employed as a Farm Labourer.

In 1901 the family are living at Turnpike Road and both James and his father are shown as Farm Labourers. 

In 1911 James is living with his parents and his sisters Elizabeth, Ann and Alice  He is still showing as a Farm Labourer. 

John enlisted at Seaforth eventually joining the 17th Battalion of The King's Liverpool Regiment as Private 51893. He was killed in action on 27/11/1916 aged 38. 
He now lies in Berles-au-Bois Churchyard Ext, France.

St John the Baptist Parish Magazine cited James Arnold was killed recently in France, attached to the Pals Battalion of the Liverpool Regiment, we have now lost 10 of our boys of the 209 serving. Youngest of four sons with four younger sisters.

He is commemorated at the following Memorials:

Ormskirk War Memorial,  St John the Baptist church, the Lathom & Burscough Cross.
