Thomas was born in Liverpool in 1873 the son of John and Julia Smith. He was married to Catherine and lived at 46 Bond Street, Liverpool. 

He enlisted and joined the 20th Battalion of The King's Liverpool Regiment as Private 22349. He was subsequently transferred to the Royal Defence Corps as Private 25453. 

Thomas was with the 122nd Company of the RDC when he died on 22/01/1917 . Thomas is commemorated on the Screen Wall at Greenwich Cemetery in London.
